A message from FAB Folk DJ
TONY HAYNES
In over 50 years of broadcasting folk music, I have been to many festivals, but the GNFF is something very special.
Set in a remote green valley in the North York Moors, it hovers somewhere between mainstream and fringe. It is the friendliest festival I have ever been to, and whilst there we are always conscious that we are guests at this special village.
The GNFF is the best kept festival secret on the UK festival scene.
Damn! Now I've let the cat out of the bag! (No cats were harmed in the making of this post).
T.H.
We will be delighted to WELCOME you to BOTTON VILLAGE for GREAT NORTH 24 , a friendly gathering for all who enjoy great acoustic music in an intimate atmosphere.
There'll be concerts in the fabulous JOAN OF ARC HALL. Artists love to play here and I know they are all looking forward to meeting and performing for you.
In the FOYER area you will find the Bar where we sell a range of locally brewed ales and other refreshments. Its also the venue for FOYER FOLK where artists perform in an informal environment.
Across the entrance lobby and into the LIBRARY is where we have our Meet the Artists, Acoustic Performances, Poetry , a Tune and a Song Sessions, The Festival Folk Club etc. Behind the hall is SKYLARK where we have a very small space for intimate concerts and workshops.
The STUDIO ,which you'll find across the green from the Main Hall, is where you'll find ‘alternative’ concerts and well worth a try.
There'll be a variety of freshly cooked and cold foods on sale in The Foyer, in the Entrance Hall and outside the main entrance.
We welcome traders and stall holders. If you're interested please contact us through this website.

BETH BURROWS
..her love of music of all genres, which we are pleased to say includes songs from the English folk tradition. Beth lives in North Yorkshire, after having spent many years in Suffolk.
Now deeply involved in the local folk scene she is a beloved host of Folk at the Hall, Whitby and a popular choice at other local venues.
Beth has a great voice, and an effervescent personality making her popular far and wide.
The Blow-Ins
The Blow-ins make gentle acoustic music with Celtic harp, guitar and voices. Playing together since they met in 2012 they’re known for original, high- quality folk music and have been heard on Radio widely in the north. They’ve performed their eclectic mix of old and new folk songs and tunes including their own compositions at many venues and festivals. A musical journey with the Blow-ins will take you from ancient love songs to contemporary protest with quiet humour and powerful emotion.
‘One of the North Yorkshire folk scene’s best kept secrets’ : Tony Haynes , Tempo FM
‘Mesmerisingly beautiful instrumentals’ : Luke Barker, Listen Local, Coast and County Radio
‘Captivating, emotive and genuine’ : Jim Taylor, Headland Festival
‘Utterly beautiful, enchanting, soul food’ : Lel Meleyal, writer
Boathook Bald
Tall Tales from The Poole Pawning Fleet
Boathook Bald is the last of the crewmen in the Poole Prawning Fleet-probably because all of the rest have gone away to do something sensible with their lives. Nothing daunted he nevertheless persists in appearing on stage to regale audiences with his tales of the Poole Prawnmen, covering such subjects as Mermaids, Fishermans’ Superstitions and Sea Monsters amongst others. He has been described, fairly accurately, as a Performance Poet, Storyteller and Exponent of the fine maritime tradition of telling fibs.
CATCH THE SPARROW
Since 2020, Dutch singer-songwriter Catch The Sparrow has called Newcastle upon Tyne her home, brought to the city by her love for traditional folk music. Sparse piano arrangements underscore her haunting voice, with her songs exploring feelings of loneliness, loss, and separation while containing an ever-present glimmer of hope. With the release of her first EP ‘Winter Flowers’ (2022) she has established herself as a captivating performer and masterful songsmith, who blends original and traditional material to create a sound that is uniquely her own. Talented folk singer and fiddle player Sam Baxter, whose brilliant fiddle arrangements add new layers of depth to her new songs, will be joining her for this performance at the Great North Folk Festival.
